Depression in India

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious mental illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. Depression can cause feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to many emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and home. Symptoms of depression must last at least two weeks for a diagnosis. Depression usually first appears in the late teens to mid 20’s, but can strike at any time in someone's life. Some risk factors for depression include biochemistry, genetics, personality, and environmental factors. Depression is treatable, and about 80 to 90 percent of people respond well to treatment. Medication, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy are some of the common forms of treatment in use today.

Farrell explains the basics of depression: what it is, what causes it, the difference from feeling depressed and having clinical depression, and the treatments for depression. To understand the effects of depression in India, we must first understand the basics of depression.

Rachanka Komatireddy  has always felt that mental health is overlooked in society and that the general population has shamed and stigmatized it beyond belief. In this talk she endeavors to shed some light on depression and what we can do to bring more awareness to it.
